About High-Cube Shipping Containers

High-cube containers are built to the same ISO length and width dimensions as their standard counterparts, but provide an extra foot of usable interior height. Introduced in the 1970s to maximize cargo capacity, this taller container stands 9’6” high, as opposed to the standard 8’6”, providing an extra 344 cubic ft of volume in a 40ft unit. On land, those extra inches of cargo capacity translate to more headroom and more storage space, making them particularly popular for container-based garage, workshop, and dwelling projects.

The most popular high-cube containers are:

  • 40ft high-cube containers: Extremely common and easily available to rent or buy, this size is useful for storage, commercial use and workshop conversions.

  • 20ft high-cube containers: Less widely produced and harder to source, but available from CHS Container Group USA.

What can you use high-cube shipping containers for?

The additional interior height available in high-cube containers makes them highly popular for a range of potential applications, including:

  • Storage—especially of tall items that wouldn’t fit in a standard unit
  • Workshops and workspaces
  • Tiny homes and conversions

As with all ISO shipping containers, high-cube containers are designed to withstand the demands of international shipping. They can be stacked, transported by truck or rail, and integrated into existing logistics chains.

In most cases, yes. High-cube pricing depends on the size and availability of the unit: 20ft high cubes are more expensive than standard 20ft containers because they’re rarer, while 40ft high cubes are more readily available and thus cheaper than 40ft standard units. If you’re not sure which size is best for you, talk to our sales team and they’ll help you find the right container for your needs.
